A sustain pedal is able to prolong the length of the last notes played, hence help it to increase the tone and the overall smoothness of the music. It is widely used on some instruments such as vibraphone and keyboards. The purpose of using a sustain pedal is to assist musicians to smoothen the notes and help the strings to vibrate together with the notes being played. It could improve the overall sound quality of the instruments.
